Getting into medical school:
To become a urology doctor, you must complete undergraduate and medical school. You must then take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and score within the 90th percentile. Once accepted into medical school, you will complete four years of training and rotations in various specialties, including surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, and psychiatry. Upon completing medical school, you will begin your residency in urology, a five-year program.
The Importance Of Shadowing:
What are the qualities of an ideal residency program? For me, it was a combination of several factors. The first was the quality of the doctor’s urology on staff. I wanted to learn from the best and be mentored by leaders in the field. Second, I looked at the location of the hospital and whether it was in an area where I felt comfortable living in the long term. Third, I considered the program’s size and whether it would provide enough variety in cases to keep me challenged and engaged. Fourth, I thought about the cost of living in the area and whether it was feasible for me to make a long-term commitment: counseling and other resources.
Choosing An Ideal Residency program:
As a student, Dr. Yalowitz was interested in both urology and surgery, so he decided to pursue a residency in urology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The faculty is world-renowned, and the program provides ample research opportunities. Dr. Yalowitz has now completed his residency and is board certified by the American Board of Urology.
